Notes

1. That Andy Richter is back with Conan O'Brien as he begins hosting The Tonight Show is fantastic. I miss the old days and was very glad to see them do a new version of "In the Year 2000," retitled as (you guessed it) "In the Year 3000." I was laughing so hard I was crying, and a little weepy too at the prospect of both guy being back together. If you haven't seen Conan yet, he's quite good and not "Late Night" Conan. He's prepared to take on the middle-aged people that used to watch Leno, who, of course, is much less funny than Conan.

2. If you're so inclined, pick up or download (which you can do legally) The Decemberists' new album, The Hazards of Love. It's a concept album, but more than that, it's really goddamn good. It's a bit rough in patches in terms of theme, but if that bothers you, I'm not sure how to help you. Like all concept albums, there are songs that have been hammered into the round hole, but the more I listen to the songs, the more I feel like they are together.

3. Moving preparations are coming along. I'm so excited about starting school that I can hardly express it in any available form.

Note

I'm alive, just have nothing terribly good to write about of late. Still working on "Sound/Chest." Planning a move to Providence at the end of July. Took a trip there last week and had a blast.

Oh, and Jennifer's a Mets fan. I feel betrayed, but at least she's kind of getting into baseball.

My fantasy team sucks again.

Sold a bunch of books and bought pants.

Thinking about buying some cheap guitar pedals from Danelectro- like $12 a pop. They seem to sound good and I don't do a lot of "stomping."

Our place in Providence is out of our price range but happily worth it. It's beautiful and the landlord is a classy guy, much like our current landlord, Kermit. We've had some luck, to say the least.

Jennifer's sister Annie is graduating from high school this coming week. She's heading to Syracuse. My wife and I will be within 5 hours of each of her sisters. And Cooperstown. And Waterbury, VT, home of Ben and Jerry's. There's a factory tour.

I'm thinking about writing a poem for an event. It's a good choice in terms of "events," but I feel strange that my mind is wandering towards it. Fortunately, when asked initially, I said I wouldn't write something, but rather find something to read. It will be a happy surprise for the event planners, no doubt.

I'm happy that Keith Waldrop is teaching the first workshop next Fall. It was an incredible honor meeting him and his wife of so many years, Rosmarie. She spent a lot of time with us at a reading while in Providence and she was so kind.

The other class I'm thinking of taking is on Modernism in the English department. It's being taught by Mutlu Blasing and I've read some great essays from her. She has a book on form and politics in poetry. Sounds right up the alley I was heading in the Nowak essay.

My last day of work at Media Services is July 16.

I've been in a Leonard Cohen mood lately, not quite a "Leonard Cohen afterworld," though.

Update

1. I feel cheated that Tim Russert passed away. Call me selfish, but the left and America really needed him this year, holding politicians "feet to the fire," as MSNBC's Chuck Todd said last night on Keith Olbermann. Now, without Russert, some of the pressure and some of the challenge of running for office is gone and I believe we're going to suffer as a result. Yes, I feel sad for the man and his family, but I also feel sad for his loss in a professional capacity. America is worse off.

2. The flood water is rising and so the University of Iowa is shut down for the next week. I'm off work (with pay) until at least June 22. I'm going to spend my time writing and working on sandbags with my fellow Iowa City residents. We went down for a few hours today before the storms of the afternoon hit and volunteers were told to leave.

3. Watching Cedar Rapids KCRG, they were showing footage of home along the Iowa River in Coralville. "Frankly, they should have expected it," the voice over said. In my anger, I called KCRG, who tried to convince me that that's not what I saw on their network. Finally, we figured out that the woman thought I was talking about the crawl on the screen. "No," I said, "that's what you're on-air person said."

"Oh."

Well, fuck you anyway, KCRG lady. Now I'm on you for the rest of the night: every time you say something about the poor deserving what they got for building near water, I'm calling you out on it. Your number is neatly in my contacts now.

In other flooding news, an evangelical church has been hit with some of the worst flooding. At least those folks won't try and convince us that Jesus flooded Iowa City due to sin because they were hit first. Of course, I'm sure they'll find a way.

Notes 5/27

Things have been crazy with family things going on. Never ceases, never ceases.

I got an A- in Dee's class. I'm going to get back to work on the paper I submitted for the class (also A-) and see if I can't get it ready for something beyond the classroom. It might not happen, but that doesn't mean I can't try. I think I'll be sending it off for the Louisville Conference. Maybe...

Was in San Jose, CA. the weekend of the 16th of May; Chicago this past (Memorial Day) weekend. Might be headed to Mississippi soon, but hopefully not.

Braves are doing better. I'm in 7th place of 9 teams on fantasy baseball.

Real post? Eventually...

Notes 10/23

1. Today's Mole Day.

2. Were you aware that I use these Notes posts in order to avoid writing actual posts about things? It's a good catch-all.

3. I'm glad the Red Sox are in the World Series. Sure, they're becoming awfully Yankee-like, but at least they don't have the arrogance that comes with money. I told Jennifer if we ever end up in the New England area, I may end up being a die-hard Sox fan, though I'd never lose my Braves loyalties.

4. Is everyone working on a book? Johannes has his memoir. Valerie Plame is making the talk show rounds with her book. Colbert's freakin' running for President (though I don't think it's terribly serious). Am I writing a book and not even aware of it? Perhaps.

5. I finished watching the film version of The Unbearable Lightness of Being and thought that the concept as a whole did not translate well but that over all I was happy with the characters and their portrayal. Daniel Day-Lewis, as usual, was excellent. I was less happy with Binoche and Olin. I thought Binoche began as terribly naive and sheltered and stayed that way throughout the film. Olin just didn't strike me as terribly Sabina-esque.

6. Going to see Dylan tomorrow night. STOKED.

7. We're hosting a small party for the Georgia-Florida game this Saturday. Sick-em!

9/23/07

Notes 9/23

1. We saw Lewis Black last night at Hancher. Not only was he totally awesome, he was also very polite when we met him after and got his autograph, which I will scan and post soon. I told him I'd seen him a few years ago at Georgia Tech (hissssssssssss) and he thanked me for being supportive. I told Jennifer that he's so great that I hope I can continue to see him for years to come. Did you all know he's 59?!

2. We got tickets for Bob Dylan and Elvis Costello, who are coming to Iowa City on October 24. We are STOKED. Johannes: eat your heart out!

3. Each Friday afternoon, I have been going to the International Writing Program's Translation Workshop. I was told to come down despite the fact that it is a class for which people are signed up. I am, obviously, not taking the class, despite the fact that I am going to end up doing a lot of the work for it. This includes being assigned a writer who has traveled from elsewhere (in my case, I am working with Aziz Shakir-Tash of Bulgaria), working on some translations with him and then having a day where we present his work. Obviously, because I'm not being graded, I am not too worried about it, I just want to have fun, meet people, and get much needed intellectual stimulation. My other goal, of course, is to help Aziz brush up his poetry to the best of my ability.

4. I've been writing poems of late myself. Not all of them are golden, of course, but some of them I've been quite happy with. Talking with Matthew Henriksen and François of late, I realized I have not submitted any poems in quite a long while, but it seems like no one is reading right now either! Strange....

5. Speaking of Matt Henriksen, Typo 10 is out and about with some awesome folks in it. Awesome poems by awesome folks in an awesome publication- whoda thunk? Foust, Tost, Hart, etc.

6. It occurs to me I'll be applying to grad school again in a year or so. It's nice not worrying about this year, though I'm not completely without thoughts on next year. For example, I think I can get two people to write letters for me (right, Johannes?) but who will three be? If only there were some demand to write letters for me, I could start a reality show.

7. Also, since I will have worked here nearly four years by the time we're ready to leave Iowa City in the summer of 2009, I will get to leave at the same time a student I have worked with since I started here. Greg and I will go out together in a blaze of glory, no doubt. During baseball season to boot!

8. Sigh, the Braves are done for and have been for some time.

9/2/07

Notes 9/2

1. It's a long weekend. I'm just getting into it- I think I'm going to need more days than 3.

2. Went to the Quad Cities this weekend with Rob and Juli so Jennifer and Juli could hit a wedding dress shop. The dress Juli found there is very her. Rob and I went and stuffed ourselves silly at a casino buffett among the oxygen-tanked folks throwing their money away. Mmmm shrimp!

3. Station to Station is slowing becoming one of my favorite Bowie albums. I'm in the middle of a Station to Station/"Heroes"/Low kick. I loved Bowie before, but was rather restricting myself to Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust... , and Diamond Dogs. Cocaine-Bowie is still good Bowie. I'm hoping to jump into Young Americans, Aladdin Sane, The Lodger, and Scary Monsters soon.

4. Working 3 days this week, but ten hours Tuesday, nine on Wednesday and Thursday each. I'm back to Sundays a week from today.

5. Planning my Chicago trip in October with my brother to see Genesis. I'm thinking about taking Greyhound so as to maximize my time there and minimize my cost. Greyhound can get me there by 7am vs. 6pm with Amtrak. Amtrak may screw me on time anyways and I'm not going to risk being late to the concert. I'd rather bum around until my brother gets in town around 11am.

Anyone with suggestions with a Chicago morning is more than welcome to share with me!

6. Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup, or something like that.

6/4/07

Notes 6/4/07

1. News up on JC Project

2. Went to Chicago this weekend for a whole 6 hours. Ate pizza, bought chocolate. Much fun was had in seeing Jennifer's sister Margaret and meeting her boyfriend Jerel. He's a good guy.

We would have spent longer in Chicago except that I had to be at work on Sunday...or so I thought.

Showed up Sunday at noon and found the doors still locked to the library and found out we were supposed to be closed. Would have been nice if someone had last me know, say, before noon on Sunday.

Jennifer's pictures of our Chicago trip are here.

3. I want to write "light" poems, I told Johannes in an email this weekend. He recommended Italo Calvino's lecture titled "Lightness" in Six Memos for the Next Millennium. He also recommended I pick up Calvino's book Invisible Cities.

I want to write poems that desire to float away, the words held together with twine, but tied well enough to stay down, and you're amazed by this ability because you expected to see them in the the air.

Notes, 12/12

1. I turned in my application to the Graduate College at the University of Iowa today. There's $60 I'll never see again.

This doesn't mean I'm done with the application process. I still have to turn in the essay and a few other things to the English department. This includes making sure my letter writers get their letters in soon. Should be fun.

2. Jennifer found a coffee shop looking for people to play on Friday nights. I haven't played in front of a live audience in 5 or 6 years at least, and it's been longer since I was doing it regularly at the Starbucks in Lilburn, Georgia. Think I can get back into it, we'll see. It would be nice to have something to add on my show list for MySpace FINALLY. Strange that I used to play every weekend and since I got that MySpace account, I've never played. Odd...

3. We're leaving Saturday for Georgia for 10 days. Should be good. Looking forward not only to my Mom's cooking, but also to my Mother-in-law's cooking. My Two Mommies are trying to kill me! I can't wait!

4. I've got a few people reading my Berryman essay, which I finished this past weekend during a massive stint at the library's second floor computer farm. No one's been able to get at it yet with finals, but hopefully David or my brother will get to it. I'm worried it's going to suck and not only will people stop thinking I'm intelligent, I'll have more work than I can handle to finish it by the 1/15 deadline. I'm fucked.

5. I have a bunch of work stuff that I haven't done because I'm lazy and it's a lot of stuff, but now that I'm going to be gone a whole week, I better figure something out or I'm boned if my boss finds out. But, it's not really that much and I have until Friday afternoon (working Friday so I don't have to work later...long story).

6. Jennifer is fried. Very busy, very tired. I wish there were some way for me to help...at all...

literally spent a while last night banging my head into the wall. no bruise or noticeable damage, but we'll see...

11/21/06

Notes 11/21

I feel bad having not written here in a little while, though I know a) it hasn't been that long and b) I haven't had much to say.

1. Johannes has a post about how he is tired of how people tend to publish their "pals" and sort of the "community". I don't disagree, though I do admit some of the published stuff I have seems to because of people knowing me, and not always merit based (but I can dream, can't I?). I, however, have been disgusted by poetry the last few days in another way:

Frankly, of late, I can't see the point. Even if I'm *wonderful*, and people do paste it on their websites or even publish it in print, who is out there reading? There's such a flood of poets and other writers now that you are literally one fish in an incredibly large pond. It's like running for office!

Think about the people in generations before us. Would we have heard of Ezra Pound had he had to compete with other folks? I feel there almost used to be a class of people who were poets and artists. My Dad jokingly told me to tell Cole Swensen that we are from the caste of Indians who are poets and thinkers (I didn't mention it, obviously, mostly because I don't believe caste is real). However, I do realize that at some point, it was a class that "ruled" poetry. I can't imagine that if Keats had to work in a coal mine, it would have had time to sit around and write poetry. Shelley, to continue with my Romantics point (being that these guys ARE the high school poetry canon), is an Ox-Man and certainly not a dock worker. My point being that these guys were of a certain class and therefore allowed and able to write.

That's different now, and that's good, but I think that there's an elitism that still exists, perhaps more so now. In the post Eliot era, poetry, I feel, has become an academic endeavor, so perhaps that's the new class of poets.

With that, though, comes a hopeless feeling. What's the point in writing if you aren't doing anything new? What if you're not really contributing anything to poetics? I can say certainly, that I am not. As of today, I have yet to do anything that makes me stand out as a poet. That's not being self-depricating: that's understanding that, as a poet, I have yet to change poetry.

But I'm young. There are some forty-year olds, flooding the market with their stuff, who have also not done a damn thing to advance poetry.

Which is why it makes me sad that Johannes is upset with poetry today. He and Joyelle are two of the only folks known to me that are doing something really interesting. Johannes has even said about his wife that she *might* be the poet of our generation (or his generation? somethin').

If I'm upset with poetry, it's bad. I'm young and I should be a little more hopeful with it. I'm just getting started and it's certainly not easy, given "community", of course. Johannes, however, is establishing himself and is doing something really exciting, which is more than most folks with multiple books can say.

There are others, of course, doing interesting work, so I don't want to get a list of "awesome" poets. Save that for Siliman.

2. I was supposed to work last Friday (I normall have Friday and Saturday off) because we were closed this weekend as this week is Thanksgiving week. We're only open 9-5, Monday through Wednesday. I'm off Wednesday.

Anyhoo, point being, I was going to work on Friday, but around 10:30pm Thursday night, Jennifer told me she was feeling pain in her chest and pain in her left shoulder and that her left hand was a little tingly. So we went to the ER.

The gave her morphine (woohoo!) and we hung out there until about 2:30am, when they told us to go home and come back for an ultrasound at 7:30am. They thought perhaps it was her gallbladder.

They didn't really find anything wrong and what not, and she's about as good as she normally is. We were certainly scared for a while, but there's no reason not to have gone to the hospital.

My boss's first concern, of course, was "When are you going to make it up?" to which I told her I had over three weeks of sick leave, so I am not going to be making it up AND I'm still taking Wednesday off (which is due to me because of my strange schedule and is a much longer answer than needed).

3. I'm getting my application for the English program ready. I wrote a PERSONAL STATEMENT OF PURPOSE and stuff and I've got to go back over Jennifer's edits.

I have yet to write my one for the Writer's Workshop, but I'm not too worried about it, especially on a day where I think I'm upset with poetry.

4. I have 1 hour and 15 minutes before I'm off of work for FOUR days! Our friend David, one of my groomsmen will be here late tomorrow afternoon for Thanksgiving. I'm excited. I think I need a good night of drinking with my old friend and first college roomie. I think it'll go a long way to making me feel more...human...again. I've been considerably bummed out of late, and I hope it helps. I think he's been feeling the same way, too. I think Jennifer's going to kick us out for a night and let us have some fun.

5. 1 hour and ten minutes now.

UPDATED: Notes: 11/8/2006

1. HAHAHAHAHA!!!! FUCK YOU GUYS!!!! IN YER FACE!!!!!!!!!!

(ahem, I had to get that out, sorry)

2. We watched MSNBC's coverage until 3am CT. It was excellent. I think Chris Matthews was a little upset at having to share the desk, but I think he ultimately came away liking Olbermann, who we love in his house.

Olbermann did a good job allowing Matthews to be the Alpha. I think his years at ESPN have shown him how to do it. Matthews always takes charge when he's around, and I think Keith was ok with that.

3. Dave Loebsack, our *new* Congressman from Iowa's Second District, is a stand-up guy whom we had the pleasure of meeting when we met John Kerry. I'm really proud of him today and proud we removed incumbent Jim Leech from office.

4. Is anyone else finding it hard NOT to be a jackass today?

5. I think the Democrats need to keep this in perspective: This is an interim gig. If we get too cocky (a la the GOP in '94), we could lose HUGE two years from now. If we're not thinking about the Presidential election in the broad sense, we're in trouble. We need to work quietly and well for two years. The risks are great and the rewards might not make up for a huge loss in '08.

6. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

UPDATES

12:57pm CT
7. Rummy's gone! 1 down, many more to go, but it's getting better all the time!

8. Montana's going blue!!!!

The Gum I Liked is Coming Back in Style (Notes 4/12/06)

1. Nick@Nite is running a 'Mad About You' marathon this week and starting next week, it will be on at 11pm ET. I doubt I'll really ever be able to watch it, but it's nice to know it's on.

I used to watch it a lot when I was in high school and I think it's a pretty good show. Jennifer keeps making fun of me for it, but if we're going to get into a "which TV show is better kind of thing", I think we'll find there's lots of terrible TV on both sides (although I don't think 'Seinfeld' is terrible).

Anyways, I guess it's going to be back on now so there's much enjoyment to be had when I can see it...and nothing better is on.

2. I only got through two of the five movies this past weekend as Jennifer did not end up going to her conference. I watched 'Jules et Jim' and 'Breathless'. Reviews will follow for all five films when I finish them.

3. We're having a pot-luck Easter dinner Saturday night (since I work Sunday's and will forever, I'm convinced). Should be good. We've bought some goodies for our crew.

4. I'm going to try and convince Rob that we should start a band. A Pixies-esque band minus Kim Deal (Rob's not THAT effeminate). We'll rock, I have no doubt.

5. As I type this, I am on the clock, burning DVDs for my boss in the U Iowa information arcade. It has two monitors on the same computer so I have like a panoramic thing going on and this window is one screen and the burning stuff is on the other. I wish I could afford this setup at home.

3/30/06

Notes 3/30

1. Home sick today. Wasn't feeling well all week but feared my boss would be upset if I took a day off though she was off three days last week because she was sick. I had to call a student in to work for me, but one was nice enough to do so.

2. Batman Returns was on A&E this afternoon and I watched it. I haven't really seen it since I saw it as a kid in the theater with my Dad (I think). I won't say I liked it more than the first one, but it certainly was damn good.

All I could think while watching it was how much I wish Michael Keaton had remained Batman. Sure, he's good in other movies, but I really feel like it was the part he was born to play. I'm sure he hears that all the time, but only because it's true. You rock(ed), Michael Keaton.

3. Meeting with a professor in the English department tomorrow. I'm excited, though nervous. Not entirely sure what my agenda is, what I want to get out of the meeting. I suppose the issue for me is whether or not I would be able to get in to the PhD program if I apply, which I'm not sure I will. I'm still leaning towards applying for the MFA, but after two rejections, I'm a little more unsure about that avenue.

4. I've been writing, but I don't know if it's very good. It's hard to gauge.

5. I've made myself a little three day weekend, and I really needed it.

"Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee."

If I have to explain where that's from, maybe this blog isn't for you :)
